The Mount Inari loop in brief
Behind the main buildings of Fushimi Inari Taisha the torii paths lead up Mount Inari, the shrine's sacred mountain. The summit stands at 233 m above sea level. That is the height of the peak itself, not the climb from the station, so do not read it as the total ascent.
The walk around the mountain is about 4 km. Allow around 2 hours at a steady pace, or 2 to 3 hours if you stop for photos, a drink and the viewpoint. The paths are open at all hours, and you can turn around wherever you like.

The route and its stations
Gates, small shrines and a view halfway up.
The way up starts at the Senbon Torii, where the gates stand close together in two rows, and continues through long tunnels of torii. Along the way you pass small shrines and stones. The shrine names several holy stations on the mountain, among them Sannomine, Ninomine and Ichinomine, and also Ainomine. Otsuka are stones carrying the names of deities, and you will see many of them beside the path.
Halfway up the mountain, the paths meet at Yotsutsuji, a crossing with a view over Kyoto. It is a view from the middle of the mountain and not a panorama from the top, so it suits a break rather than a goal. If you only have limited time, this is a sensible place to turn around.
| Option | What you see | Time frame |
|---|---|---|
| Lower shrine and first gate tunnels | Main grounds, Senbon Torii | As long as you like |
| Up to Yotsutsuji | The crossing halfway up with the view over Kyoto | Roughly half of the mountain walk |
| Full loop | All stations to the summit area and back down | 2 to 3 hours with breaks |

On the mountain
Food, animals, weather and light.
Drinks and food
About halfway there is a souvenir shop and a tea stand with snacks and drinks. Do not count on it being open at every hour. Carry water, especially in summer.
Wild boar
The shrine has warned of wild boar on Mount Inari (notice of 28 December 2025). Keep your distance from any wild animal, do not feed it, and follow the signs on site.
Etiquette →Weather
August has the highest average daily maximum in Kyoto at 33.7 °C, and July the most rain at 223.6 mm. Spring and autumn are cooler. Summer brings heat, humidity and sudden afternoon storms, so plan the walk for the morning or evening.
Best time to visit →What to wear and carry
Sturdy shoes, water, rain protection and your own light if you walk after dark. The stairs and slopes can be wet after rain.
After dark
The paths stay open at night. Bring your own light and check the last train before you set out.
Fushimi Inari at night →Photos and other visitors
The paths are narrow in places. The shrine asks visitors not to block them for photos, dance or performances.
Making the most of the walk
Start early if you want quiet gate tunnels, and bring a small bag instead of a big backpack. Keep to the paths and do not enter fenced areas or closed buildings.
The torii along the way were given by donors. How that works, and what the gates cost, is explained on the torii gates page.
