Tofukuji at a glance
Tofukuji lies in southeast Kyoto, close to Fushimi Inari, and pairs well with the shrine in one outing. Its best-known spot is the Tsutenkyo, a bridge that links the Hojo and the Kaisando over a wooded gorge. In autumn the maples below the bridge turn red, and that is when most visitors come.
The temple has two paid areas, the Tsutenkyo and Kaisando, and the Honbo and Hojo garden. Prices rise for the Hojo garden on 1 November 2026, and the autumn season has its own, higher fee.

From the Toba Kaido side

Autumn leaves, the bridge and photos
What to expect at the busiest time.
When the leaves turn
Kyoto's autumn leaves usually peak from mid-November to early December. That is a typical window, not a forecast. It is also the busiest time at the bridge, so plan an early start.
Best time to visit →The Tsutenkyo bridge
The bridge connects the Hojo and the Kaisando over a wooded gorge. When it gets crowded, photos on the bridge can be limited.
Photo rules
Commercial shoots without permission and tripods are not allowed. Keep to the paths and be patient on busy days.
Combine with the shrine
The shrine is open 24 hours, so you can walk the torii early and reach the temple when it opens at 09:00. If your trip continues to Tokyo, Senso-ji in Asakusa has its own guide.
